Grey Squirrel Pest Control
Grey Squirrel
The most common pest squirrel in the UK, primarily found in lofts, attics, and roof spaces. Grey squirrels can cause damage by gnawing on wood, wires, and insulation.
How we deal with Squirrels
Grey squirrels can be quite aggressive, and their sheer muscle power is incredible. It’s illegal in the UK to release a grey squirrel once captured. Due to this legislation, we only use instant kill traps for grey squirrels. The traps have been specially developed for squirrel use only and are extremely humane. It’s no longer legal to use anticoagulant against grey squirrels.
DIY Pest Control
If you are thinking of catching squirrels yourself, bear in mind that a cage trap must be checked every few hours, including through the night. Leaving an animal in distress is unacceptable, which is why we use instant-kill traps.
Please don’t buy a cheap ‘kill’ trap online. You are likely to receive a rat trap that would struggle to kill a rat, let alone a squirrel, and end up with a distressed squirrel running around your loft with the trap stuck to its head. Imagine climbing into your loft to deal with that; we have.
If you catch a squirrel in a live cage trap, it must then be dispatched humanely. Drowning it in a pond or water butt is not humane and is a criminal offence. The accepted humane method is shooting the squirrel in the trap, which should only be done by someone trained and equipped to do it safely. Take care carrying the trap out of the loft: squirrels are very strong and a bite to your fingers is extremely painful.
